Visiting the Gurdwara

The following protocols must be adhered to when visiting the Gurdwara Sahib:

  • The consumption of alcohol, narcotics, tobacco (including vaping) is strictly forbidden on Gurdwara premises (including the car park). You should not attend if you have consumed or are under its influence at the time of the visit.
  • When entering the Gurdwara Sahib shoes must be removed and placed in the shoe rack provided in the entrance area.
    • Once you have removed your shoes, please wash your hands before entering the main Darbar Hall.
  • Appropriate, modest clothing should be worn.
    • Your head must be covered at all times using a scarf or large handkerchief.
    • Additional head coverings are available should you require (these can be found in a crate in the entrance). Hats or caps are strictly forbidden.
  • Upon entering the main Darbar hall, walk calmly towards the Guru Granth Sahib Ji (Sacred Scripture).
    • For Sikhs it s obligatory to show the utmost respect to the Guru Granth Sahib Ji by bowing down on your knees and touching the floor with your forehead
    • For a non-Sikh visitor, you may show respect to the Sikh “Holy Scriptures” by bowing or standing still for a second and then moving away with a respectful nod
    • If you wish, you can make a voluntary donation (in British currency) by placing money in the Golak (donation box)
  • After bowing, you may sit down in the Sangat (congregation)
    • Please sit quietly, without disturbing others.
    • Usually, men sit on one side and women on the other, in a cross-legged position.
  • Langar, (vegetarian food from the Guru’s kitchen) is served in the hall adjacent to the Darbar Hall.
    • Please wait to be served at the serving window.
    • To reduce food waste, please only take what you are able to eat and feel free to decline or request a reduced amount.
    • Whilst every care has been taken in preparing Langar, the Sevadaars (volunteers) cannot avoid cross contamination of food ingredients. It is important that those with allergies are extra cautious when consuming langar. Children with allergies must be supervised by their parents/guardian at all times.  Whilst we sympathise, the Gurdwara Sahib and the Sevadaars cannot be held responsible for any incidents resulting from cross contamination.
